About the university
The University of the Basque Country (Universidad del País Vasco / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, UPV/EHU) is a public university serving the Basque Autonomous Community in northern Spain. Legally created in 1980 (with roots back to 1968), it is a multi-campus institution with three main campuses: Bizkaia (Leioa–Bilbao area), Gipuzkoa (San Sebastián/Eibar) and Álava (Vitoria-Gasteiz). UPV/EHU enrolls around 45,000 students and offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs in engineering, sciences, health sciences, law, economics and business, humanities, social sciences and arts. It appears in major global rankings around the 800–1000 band and ranks roughly 10th nationally. Teaching is mainly in Spanish and Basque, with some English-taught courses and programs.
