About the university
Universidad de Quintana Roo (UQROO), officially Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Quintana Roo, is a public university founded in 1991. The main campus is in Chetumal (Boulevard Bahía); other campuses are in Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Cancún, and Felipe Carrillo Puerto, plus a virtual campus with fully online bachelor’s programs. UQROO offers licenciaturas, engineering, health sciences (medicine, nursing, pharmacy), master’s and doctoral programs in 34+ programs. It is recognized by Mexico’s Secretariat of Public Education and has strength in liberal arts and social sciences. Teaching is mainly in Spanish. Mexican students do not pay tuition; only the admission process fee applies.

Campus life
UQROO has six campuses: Chetumal Bahía, Chetumal Salud, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Cancún, and Felipe Carrillo Puerto, plus a virtual campus. Chetumal Bahía hosts the Universiada and Juegos Deportivos Universitarios; 22 sports are offered as integral formation. From 2025, sports schools for taekwondo and basketball operate in Chetumal. Mexican students pay no tuition; only the CENEVAL admission fee (about 1,100 MXN). Foreign students pay admission and enrollment fees. Registration and convocatorias are published on the university website and ingreso.uqroo.mx.

Career & internships
Internships: Professional practices and placements are part of the curriculum for many programs (e.g. Law, Economics, Tourism, Government, Humanities, Engineering, Marketing, Hotel Administration). Minimum duration is usually 2 months (200–320 hours). Practices must be in institutions with a valid agreement with UQROO. The process has several stages and starts with orientation at the Departamento de Apoyo a la Experiencia Educativa. Students complete procedures and formats through the intranet (practices section).

It also manages federal and external programs such as Manutención, Jóvenes Escribiendo el Futuro, Elisa Acuña, Becas para Mujeres en Educación Superior (min. 8.0), and Fundación Comunitaria Cozumel.
